If you have ever joined an MLM / network marketing program, it’s highly likely that the first thing the company will have told you is that you have to target your warm market. These are simply people in your life who you have good relationships with, ie your friends and family. However is it really a good idea to get these people involved in your network marketing business?
Let’s start by discussing the negatives. Firstly, approaching your close friends and family members with your latest MLM project generally never goes down very well. It’s not only uncomfortable for you trying to sell the business to them, but it often draws negative responses from them, resulting in them coming to the wrongful conclusion that it’s a scam.
This can have the effect of your close friends and family lowering their opinion of you because you’re involved in what they consider to be dubious MLM businesses. In addition, in the worst case scenario this can lead to them avoiding you so they don’t have to listen to you pitching your network marketing business to them, and the embarrassment caused by them turning down your offer.
One other drawback to introducing your friends and family to your network marketing business, that I want to mention, is that even if they do join you are they really the kind of people who are going to work hard to build their own downline? Even if they do have the motivation, do they have the necessary knowledge and advertising know-how to recruit new members?
By now you’re probably thinking that I definitely do NOT recommend introducing friends and family to your latest network marketing ventures. Well that’s not necessarily true, there are exceptions.
I’m a full-time online marketer who has not only a good knowledge of the network marketing industry, but also a large advertising budget. Therefore my golden rule is that if I’m going to introduce my close group of friends and family to my latest venture, then I will be doing everything in my power to get them into profit with the program as soon as possible. I will tell them this, and I will also pass on my knowledge of the industry, including what are the best ways of building a downline, where to advertise for optimum results, etc. I will even pay to advertise their unique affiliate links, if necessary, out of any profits I make, just to get them into profit.
In addition, in certain network marketing companies you can really generate a significant income for these people. For example, if you place them immediately below you in your downline when you first join a specific program, and they receive spillover from your efforts, then they could do very well out of the program, without doing a lot of recruiting themselves. These are the types of programs that you really want your friends and family involved in if at all possible.
To conclude, while there are drawbacks to approaching the people you are closest to in life with what is effectively a sales pitch, there are instances where they could do very well financially from joining your program. My advice is this. If you are convinced that you can attract a lot of members in the future, and have sufficient knowledge to pass on to your close friends and family who sign up under you, then by all means approach them with your proposal. If, on the other hand, you are an inexperienced marketer, new to the industry, then my advice is to not even mention that you are a member of a network marketing program, let alone attempt to persuade them to join you.

Home based business network marketing is often not a simple task. As a home business owner, you probably dont have the resources that larger ventures can allocate to advertising. However, by using your personal network, you will be able to raise awareness about your home business.
Why the need to advertise? If you have an excellent product, you may feel that people should seek you out so they can have the benefits of what you offer. This, of course, makes for poor business. No matter what you do or what you offer, you will still have to promote your products. How will people do business with you if they dont even know that you are in business?
Your personal network is an excellent way to jump start your advertising efforts. Your personal network includes, of course, your family, your friends and your acquaintances. Because home based businesses are invariably small at the beginning, you will need all the help that you can get, so you should start soliciting sales from the people who know and love you.
Just because you are selling to your family and friends, it does not mean that you can be lax and complacent. In fact, you should probably do more for them than the average customer. Within reason, do all that you can to satisfy them, then ask them to do you a favor, Ask them to use their personal networks to get the word about your business out.
You can use a variety of gimmicks to get your home based business network marketing campaign to a great start. For instance, you might want to provide your friends and family with stickers that they can slap on their cars or maybe flyers that they can post at work. Or you might give them a healthy stack of business cards that they can give away for you. The key, of course, is to make it easy for them to spread the word.
These days, technology makes it easier to advertise. And if you dont believe it, witness the rise of social networking sites like Friendster or MySpace. If you maintain accounts on these sites, you might want to include a few ads on your profile. Alternatively, you might want to buy some ad space in some of the more popular sites on your local community.
If you went about it right, it should not be too difficult to get more people to notice you. A home based business network marketing campaign will depend a great deal on what people say about your business, so keep fairly close watch over the grapevine. If you hear any criticism, dont get defensive. Use it as an opportunity to improve. As long as you keep improving, you will see results sooner or later.

Now that you have signed on the dotted line to start an MLM Business, how does really it work?
You signed an independent distributorship contract that says you are licensed to market the company’s products or services and you are also licensed to build a distribution channel of marketers to bring those products or services to the consumer market place.
This contract explicitly says that you are not an employee to the company. You do not derive a salary, benefits, or any other compensation other than what you are entitled to as more products or services are sold. Your compensation is directly proportionately to your ability to move products/services on behalf of your provider MLM company.
The problem is that most of us are trained to think in terms of being employees as opposed to thinking as business owners.
MLM companies understand that it is easier to train people to be employees than entrepreneurs because that is what we are taught to become in our early years of adulthood. So most people still continue to have an employee mindset even though they are now full fledge independent MLM business owners.
There is a mindset that you as a network marketer distributor needs to have if you are to become a successful start up MLM home business owner.
You must treat your mlm business as your own enterprise or company separate from your provider MLM company.
When you signed those papers from your company, you became an Independent Representative.
You have been asked to conduct your business in a manner that is in alignment with the company’s policy. While the company implements these policies, at the same time, it treats you as if you were an employee.
The training, tools, and techniques to promote company’s products and/or services are made available to YOU to guarantee the success of the company’s business first and foremost and not necessarily your own success.
Regardless of where you are in your business: just started or have a large organization; this mindset should carry you and help you avoid the traps and save you money.
Most importantly use this mindset to guide yourself as you run your business. Ask yourself, if I spend this money what is my return on my investment? Do not allow yourself be moved by the hype and the emotions.
Do not let an upline leader entice you to spend your money if the rationale behind his/her line of thinking is not there.
I am not saying that you should not bet for the company’s success, on the contrary you should. What I am saying is that you should treat your network marketing business as your own company, just the same way as your provider company treats its business.
Your actions should be guided by this principle. Ask yourself. If my provider ever goes out of business, would I still be in business or would I be out of business, too?
If you run your business as your own, you should be able to use another provider’s services or products without any interruptions to your customers.
You should always thrive for that. This is the concept of independence, become the CEO of your own distribution company.
When you realize this concept, you can begin to see holes in many techniques used in network marketing. They’re just not designed to benefit your distribution channel company. However, they are designed to benefit your provider company or your upline leaders.
Take a look at marketing to your friends and family for instance. How can you build a business when you are taught to market to a handful of consumers who by the way might or might not have any interests in your products or services to start with? What happens after you run out of your warm market, what then?
Do you see the hole in that thought?
In conclusion, as a business owner you should work your business like any other business even a network marketing business, guide your actions as a CEO of your own distribution company, so that your own company benefits the most.

Depending on the type of network marketing program you’re promoting, your choice of who you sign up to the program under can be absolutely critical. Indeed it can be the difference between making a modest monthly income and making an absolute fortune. So what attributes should you look for in a potential sponsor?
Firstly, if the network marketing company offers spillover then I always recommend looking to sign up under a big hitter. I define big hitters as being those people who have huge lists of opt-in subscribers they can send promotional emails to, and / or those people who have large advertising budgets to spend on recruiting new members.
If you have been involved in the internet or network marketing industry for any length of time you will soon learn who these big hitters are. You will find their solo ads in popular newsletters, see them listed in the pay per click listings, and possibly at the top of the organic search results for related keywords as well, hear their names crop up in related forums, come across articles and ebooks that they’ve written, products they have created, etc.
If you can find one of these big hitters that’s promoting the program that you want to join, then they immediately become good candidates to sign up under. However there are other factors you should consider, particularly if you are a relatively inexperienced network marketer.
Because of the very fact that they are big hitters, these guys have the resources to recruit hundreds, if not thousands, of people into their downline. Therefore they will not have the time to work closely with individual members, so you will often have to figure out for yourself how to successfully promote the program. So rather than just blindly signing up under a big hitter, you should email that person before you join the program, and ask them what support they will provide to you if you sign up under them, and ask them if they can advise you on how you can promote the program.
You will find that some of these big hitters are actually very good in this area, and will provide you with duplicable promotion methods or systems put in place to help their downline recruit members for themselves. Unfortunately these are in the minority, however, as most big hitters are not too worried about members failing in the program and dropping out because they know they can constantly recruit new members on a regular basis, and continue earning large residual commissions.
So to sum up, the ideal person to have as your upline would be one that has the resources to recruit plenty of new members so you benefit from their spillover. It would also be someone who provides leadership, offers help and support, and has a duplicable promotion method that fellow members can use to build their own downline. If you can find someone who has all of these qualities, then you will be on the road to success.
However, don’t forget that you have to put some work in yourself to be really successful in network marketing. In addition, your long term ambition should be to become a big hitter yourself, and someone who prospective members actively seek out when looking for someone to sign up under. Even if you don’t have a great sponsor yourself, aim to become that perfect sponsor, and watch your network marketing career really take off.

Many old-school network marketers still prefer to buy and cold-call leads to recruit new members into their network marketing business. There’s nothing wrong with this, but I personally prefer to embrace online techniques, which on the whole are just as effective, if not more so. Ezine advertising in particular is, in my opinion, one of the best ways of growing your downline.
An ezine is simply a newsletter delivered in electronic format, via email, to opt-in subscribers who have chosen to receive it. The content of these ezines usually centre around a specific subject, so by identifying ezines whose readers would be interested in your network marketing opportunity, you can access a highly targeted market through paid advertisements in these ezines.
There are various types of advertising available in these ezines, that cater for all budgets. Indeed some ezines even provide free classified advertising for it’s subscribers. However, for greater results you will want to purchase advertising space in these ezines. Generally you can pay to place your ad at the top of the ezine, in the middle, or at the bottom. It’s been proven that the higher up your ad appears, the more exposure your ad will receive. Advertising prices generally reflect this fact.
These types of advertising are okay, but if you want to see dramatic results from your advertising you should purchase a solo ad from the ezine owner. Solo ads are simply standalone email messages sent separately from the actual newsletter itself. They enable you to write longer, more detailed ads, that promote your network marketing company, and will be sent to every subscribed member of an ezine, ensuring that your message gets the undivided attention of the ezine subscribers. These types of ads are the most expensive but I’ve always found them to be the most effective.
For optimum success I recommend finding ezines whose readers are likely to be interested in your offer, and subscribing to the ezine first to see how good the content is, and how often solo ads are sent out. Ideally you want to find those that don’t send out solo ads too often, and those with a highly responsive readership. This is important because although the size of an ezine’s readership is a factor, it’s the responsiveness of the ezine readership (plus of course the quality of your ad copy) that will ultimately determine how successful your advertising will be. So don’t just target ezines with high readership, try out ezines of varying sizes and test the responsiveness of each one.
A good way of finding out how responsive an ezine is is by asking the ezine owner how soon your solo ad will be sent out. If you find that it will go out almost immediately, then you know that there isn’t a long list of advertisers waiting for their ad to run, but if you find that there is a waiting period of at least a few weeks, then you at least know that advertising in their ezine is in great demand, so must be quite responsive.
To conclude, if you want to successfully promote your network marketing opportunity online, then advertising in targeted ezines, particularly through solo ads, is one form of advertising that I can strongly recommend.

Network marketing is not easy, especially when you’re first starting out in the industry. It can be immensely frustrating trying, without success, to get that elusive first referral. So in this article I want to discuss how you can get your network marketing business off to a flying start.
To begin with you can target your warm market, ie your friends and family. This will certainly get your network marketing business going, but I don’t personally recommend going down this road, unless the people you enrol are serious about promoting the business. If they’re not completely committed then they will inevitably drop out of the program, leaving you back at square one.
The only time I personally like to bring my friends and family into my network marketing programs is when I know I can enrol many new members, who I can then place underneath them, earning them a nice income without too much effort. In addition, I will often conduct fully-fledged advertising campaigns that include their affiliate links, just to get their downline going, and to get them into profit as soon as possible.
The real test comes when you try to promote your program to people you don’t know, ie your cold market. In the long-term you should try and build your online presence through writing articles, creating a website or blog that promotes the program, and promoting that site through advertising and search engine optimization.
However, to start building your downline in the short-term, you basically need to promote your offer to as many people as possible. You want to reach a mass audience of people who may be interested in your product or program.
There are various ways of going about this. The first method of promotion, and one that I always use to start promoting my programs, is ezine advertising. By advertising in highly targeted ezines, you can immediately place your offer in front of potentially thousands of interested prospects. This can be highly effective, particularly if you use solo ads, because these are sent out separately from the ezine itself, meaning your email gets the readers’ undivided attention.
Another way of reaching a large audience is by posting comments on popular forums, relevant to the product or program that you are promoting. By this I don’t mean blatantly advertising your network marketing business, but instead including a link to it in the sig file, if the forum allows it. This is simply the short block of text that appears at the end of every message. You can use this to promote your own website or affiliate links. To get the most click-thrus, it’s not just a case of posting as much as possible, but providing good quality and informative comments, as this will lead to more people wanting to find out more about you and the programs that you are promoting.
These two methods mentioned above, ezine advertising and posting on popular forums, will immediately place your ad in front of a large targeted audience. There are also other online promotional methods you could use, such as traffic exchanges and safelists, although you have to remember that most of the people who will be viewing your ad will only be interested in promoting their own product or program.
That basically covers some of the many online methods you can use to start building your downline straight away. However, don’t forget that offline marketing can be just as effective as online marketing. For example, if you want to reach a mass audience offline, you could pay for newspaper and/or magazine advertising, or create business cards and flyers that you can then distribute to as many people as possible.
To summarise, there are various methods you can use to start building your downline straight away. You simply need to reach a large audience, whether it’s online or offline, and present them with an irresistible offer.
As a closing comment, if you can set yourself apart from the other promoters, then you will have even greater success building your downline. For example, you could offer free bonuses to people who sign up under you, or you could provide them with a duplicable system they can use to build their own downline.
James Woolley runs his own website dedicated to helping people make money online. He also heavily promotes network marketing programs. For more information click on the following link:
A lot of people would shy away when we start talking about home based business in network marketing for the simple reason that they dont want to sell goods and services. If you take a closer look into network marketing, you will find out that it does not necessarily mean peddling or offering goods and services to your friends or family members. In fact, network marketing is really a system of income sharing and cost sharing.
How does a home based business on network marketing work? Network marketing work by recruiting members who will use the product it is selling. The system is multi level where a person who becomes a member of the network can recruit a friend or a family member to register under his or her network. Every time the recruit purchases a product of the company, the recruiter gets a commission. The good thing about network marketing is that you do not only get a commission on your direct recruit but also on the purchases of your recruits recruit usually up to the fourth level. Some networking companies give commission up to the eight level of recruits which really is a big advantage if you have a wide network.
Many people have benefited from network marketing. People who set up home business in network marketing have succeeded in earning huge money from their networks. The key to success in the networking business is helping each other build a wide member base. A member who helps his or her recruit in recruiting more people would benefit and most likely enjoy the benefits of earning commissions from their recruits recruit so it is really a good idea to help each other.
There are many critics who would say that network marketing only makes the people on top of the network rich while those at the bottom will not get anything. Well, that is a matter of opinion. The system is really about pooling of resources by creating a network of consumers. If you build a network, not everybody could be on top at once but everyone will have a fair chance of making it to the top if one will work hard enough. A home based business in network marketing is created to function as a team business, meaning you help each other out. The structure is like a pyramid where the base is bigger than the top. As more people who are added to the base of the pyramid, those who are on the upper portion will be pushed to the top. Every time a line below the pyramid is added, the line above it will reach another level. The idea really is to help each other add more people at the base of the system so that you can reach the top. In effect, as you help those people below you to reach another level of the network, you will also be helping yourself get to another level of the pyramid.

Now I don’t know about you but I’ve tried buying a list of leads and cold calling these leads to tell them about my business opportunity, and to be honest have had awful results. Why? Because firstly I don’t enjoy doing it one bit, and secondly I’m just not very good at it. I have my strengths but selling my network marketing opportunity to people over the phone is not one of them.
Thankfully in this day and age, you can still be wildly successful in the network marketing industry without having to cold call leads. How? Well through the internet of course.
The internet really is a fantastic recruitment tool. There are so many excellent online promotional methods you can use to promote your business. Listed below are some of the methods that have worked for me:
Forums:
By posting in popular forums that allow sig files (the few lines that appear at the end of each post), and that relate to the program you are promoting, you can indirectly advertise your network marketing opportunity every time you post a comment to a forum. This can be very effective. Just make sure you only write quality posts, and try and offer helpful and useful information to help build your reputation, as this will inevitably lead to more people clicking on your sig file.
Creating A Website Or Blog And Optimizing It For The Search Engines:
This is a long-term process but can deliver exceptional results over time if you can get your site, that promotes your program, ranked highly in the search engines. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is too big a subject to discuss here, but by developing your knowledge of this area, you really can achieve phenomenal results.
Pay-Per-Click Advertising:
This can be very expensive, especially if you’re new to this form of advertising, but paying the search engines to place your promotional website or affiliate link in their sponsored results can be a great way of recruiting new members. Your ultimate aim should obviously be to get the maximum amount of click-thrus for the minimum cost per click. This is easier said than done, but if you can discover some cheap and yet highly targeted and relevant keywords, then you could see some good results from this form of advertising.
Advertising On High-Traffic Websites:
This is pretty self-explanatory, but is another promotional technique that has worked well for me in the past. I recommend buying text links rather than banner ads, as this will allow you to use your main keywords in the link text, which will help you rank higher in the search engines.
Ezine Advertising:
This is one of my favourite forms of advertising because you can reach a large targeted audience for a relatively low cost in most instances. Although you can place ads in the actual ezines themselves, I recommend purchasing solo ads as these will get the undivided attention of the ezine’s readers because your email will be sent separately from the actual ezine.
Viral Marketing:
This is simply where you create a free informational product and offer giveaway or resale rights, so people can distribute it all over the internet, creating a lot for publicity for you as the original author of the product. The actual product itself could be an ebook that relates to the product or program that you are promoting, or it could be a simple one page article. I regularly write articles myself and distribute them to not only all the major article directories, but also directly to ezine publishers, who are always looking for new articles to publish in their ezine. You really can get huge exposure using these techniques.
There are other forms of promotion you could use to promote your network marketing business such as advertising on list-building sites, safelists, and traffic exchanges, but in my experiences these sites are not as effective as those methods outlined above.
Hopefully by now you can see that it’s no longer necessary to go through the laborious task of buying leads and cold calling them in order to build your downline and grow your business. There’s nothing wrong with this promotional method, but the internet has opened up so many other avenues to promote your business and find leads, that you don’t have to talk to a single person if you don’t want to.
So if you do join a network marketing company, and the dinosaurs running the company tell you that you have to hit the phones to grow your business, remember this article and use promotional methods that are right for you.
I’m a full-time online marketer, and heavy promoter of network marketing programs. To read more about network marketing, and to see which programs I’m currently promoting, click on the following link:
There is an important lesson to be learned from traditional business that can be applied to Network Marketing.
I’d like to discuss 10 key benefits why MLM programs are great businesses. Use these benefits to promote your MLM Program and to recruit anyone in your organization.
1. Small amount of risk:
There is a certain amount of inherited risk involved when you become an entrepreneur.
We are confronted with losing money, wasting time, not being in profit right away, etc. In a traditional brick and mortal business, the startup cost associated with opening that business is what holds many people back from becoming the creators of their own destiny.
People do not like risk and try to avoid it by all means. We’d like a “guaranteed bet” and stay within “our safe zone”. In business, you don’t eliminate risks you learn to minimize them.
The advantage of starting an MLM Program is that there is a small risk to get started. With a couple of hundred dollars, it is possible to get started with a company of your choice, marketing products that you consume already. The amount of financial commitment is insignificant compared to that of traditional business.
2. A huge demand for good quality products:
There are a myriad of network marketing companies that promote very good products. If I were considering a company to get involved with, I would always ask myself:
* Would I still consume these products/services if there were no opportunity to market them?
* Do these products bring any benefits to a consumer besides the opportunity to make money?
* Would I bring “value” to my customers if they consume these products?
Every business needs repeat customers. Distributors only get paid when they have consumers for their products and when these customers continue that consumption, then that creates the money flow.
3. Residual income:
I am sure that you pay your gas, your electricity, and your phone bill every single month. These are the types of services that for the most part provide an ongoing stream of residual income for these companies.
The greatest advantage of an MLM Program is that it gives you an opportunity to enjoy residual income just like those companies do.
When the initial effort of getting a new customer is completed, you can enjoy the residual part of that business relationship.
We are so used to trading our time for wedges that we often times don’t see the potential residual income of an MLM Affiliate Program. By direct selling your products, you can also claim your share of the residual income pie.
4. The income potential:
There is no cap on how much money you can generate. In my corporate jobs, my big limitation was that regardless how hard I worked for these companies; my income was tied to a “market standard” for someone with my skills.
In an MLM Program, that’s not the case. It is up to you to decide how much you want to earn. An MLM company doesn’t hold you back in the same way the corporate environment does.
As long as you have the skills set of a trained network marketer, you make whatever income based on your stamina, dedication, and your willingness to help others.
The skills set is key. Once you trained yourself to become a marketer, you can market anything you choose and generate that income you seek.
5. No employees to hire:
By far, this is a clear advantage over traditional businesses. An mlm affiliate program is a business of people independently working together.
Without any employees, it’s possible to build a business right from home. This industry gives you that added benefit, be in business without employees concerns, by having a network of independent business owners working together towards a common goal.
6. No inventory:
Traditionally Network Marketing companies would have distributors stack up on inventory. This concept alone has given the industry a bad wrap for years.
However, modern companies do capitalize on the technology and tools we have in place. We have:
The following paragraphs summarize the work of network marketing experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of network marketing. Heed their advice to avoid any network marketing surprises.
Network marketing has always been a great way to get the word out about any business. No matter if you are selling a product or a service, you can increase your sales in no time at all. And in today’s day and age,it is more effective than ever before. In the past it was a great way to make contacts as well as sales, but this has grown more than anybody could have expected. If you do not take advantage of it, you will never reach your fullest potential.
If you do not know what network marketing is there is no reason to give up. The fact of the matter is that it is quite easy to understand; it is exactly what it sounds like. With network marketing you get your name out there by talking with other people, and making industry contacts. The more people that you know, the better chance you have of making sales. And remember, the contacts that you make have contacts of their own. So in time word begins to spread about your offerings.
It’s all about getting in touch with the people that can help you out the most. Of course your number one target should be people in your direct industry. In other words, people that would be interested in buying your product are people that you should network with.
It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.
The best way to get started in network marketing is by making yourself accessible to a large amount of people. Believe it or not, social networking sites such as Myspace have become quite popular for individuals and businesses alike. With these services you can introduce yourself to millions of people without ever having to do too much work. And of course with each person that you meet, you have added another person to your network.
The good thing about network marketing is that you may not make a sale today from somebody that you meet. But down the line that same person may be looking for a product or service and remember the conversation that they had with you. But none of this is possible unless you get the word out, and are not afraid to network in an aggressive manner.
If you want to make big profits, network marketing can help to put you on the right track. For many years businesses have been using it as a way to reach the next level, and today this still holds true.
Generally speaking, network marketing does not cost a thing. All you have to do is find people to network with and get started. It does not get much easier, and cost efficient than that.
Those who only know one or two facts about network marketing can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you’re learning here.
